HISTORY OF
SHIKOMU KARATE CLUB
The Shikomu Karate Club is the current version of the original Pearson Karate Club run by Sensei Ken Bowman and Shihan Kal Helppi from the mid 1980's until 1999. The Pearson Dojo believed that no class was tough enough, no student could train hard enough, and that bumps and bruises were trophies to be proud of rather than sources of complaint. The Pearson Dojo trained nonstop, relentlessly and without compromise.
Now that the alumni of the Pearson Dojo are a little older, a lot smarter and not nearly as military, we have regrouped and opened the Shikomu Karate Club. The SKC still values hard work, sound fundamentals, group dynamics and strong unbending spirit but we also recognize and accept that different people require different training to become the best they can be. Accordingly, the black belts of the Shikomu Karate Club have modified training to make karate an experience that can be enjoyed by everyone. We are a group of like minded men, women and children who are combining their talents and training to build one of the best and most successful clubs on the market.
We are closely associated with Shihan Bill Carr who is the President of the United Shotokan Karate-Do. Shihan Carr is a 6th degree black belt recognized by Karate Ontario, the National Karate Association and Sport Canada. Shihan Carr is a friend of the dojo who assists us with black belt grading standards as well as day to day technical work. He is known by Canadian karate personnel as one of the most gifted and accomplished karate instructors in this country and indeed worldwide.
The Shikomu Karate Club is a member in good standing of Karate Ontario, the National Karate Association and Sport Canada, and accordingly, offer students formal recognition of ranks achieved, insurance, technical clinics and tournament opportunities.
The Shikomu Karate Club believes that quality martial arts training should be affordable and enjoyable.
